The Balkan Peninsula

For the majority of people, World War One was fought on two fronts; the Eastern Front with some movement and the Western Front with its line of static trenches. What most individuals do not realize is the magnitude of fronts that erupted all over the globe over the course of the four year war. The other fronts included Africa, Palestine, Italy and even Gallipoli. Let us take a look at the Gallipoli Front and discuss why and when it was fought, major battles and the final results between the Ottoman Empire and the Allies.

The Ottoman Empire 1914

At the outset of World War One, the Ottoman Empire was on the side of neutrality. She was in the middle of rebuilding her military after two bloody and costly Balkan wars the previous years. Britain won the privilege of rebuilding Turkey’s navy while Germany was rebuilding her army. Unlike the other European powers, nobody had threatened Turkey, but Germany offered the Ottoman Empire two things that helped sway their decision to declare war against Britain, France and Russia.

One was Germany’s offer of two ships, the Goeben and Breslau. At the start of the war, these two ships were evading British patrols in the Mediterranean Sea, but they needed to head to safety before their luck ran out. Germany offered the two ships to be in the Ottoman fleet and was thus given safe passage up the Dardanelles Strait to Constantinople.
