The second entry into Bohemia Interactive's Armed Assault series greatly expands on the gameplay elements of its predecessors, the original Armed Assault and Operation Flashpoint, firmly establishing itself as the most comprehensive and realistic military simulator available to date outside of the defense community.

ArmA2's storyline draws on European conflicts of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, such as the Yugoslav wars and the Moldovan civil war in the 1990s, and Russia's 2008 war with Georgia, to fashion a hypothetically plausible conflict scenario set in a fictional Eastern European country.

The ethnically-divided state of Chernarus collapses into chaos and internecine conflict after a rebel group in the Russian-speaking part of the country begins a surprisingly effective campaign of armed struggle against the government coupled with ethnic cleansing. The rebels wage war using both conventional and asymmetrical warfighting techniques and are soon able to bring the Chernarussian military to its knees. Desperate to stop the slaughter, Chernarus' leaders appeal to the outside world for help. A United States Marine Corps' Marine Expeditionary Unit is dispatched to put an end to the brutal conflict.
