Future Cop: LAPD - Playstation - 1998

Create hover tanks. Attempt to invade enemy base. Repeat. This vision of a crime ridden godless wasteland set in LA sometime in the future (or perhaps the present day) is delightfully simple and addictive. They say the best formulas are simple, well the basic concept of building a tank and attempting to escort one inside the enemy base to win with your transformer like Mech-walker. At its strongest on multi-player, the single player is nothing very innovative, quite fun to smash through though it is.

Playing a friend, attempting to enter their base, or just building a fine fleet of attack choppers only to watch in dismay as their incompetent pilots cluster around your base, brings back great memories. The graphics were great at the time, now they do a solid job. It is the base defending/attacking multi-player that makes this game one of my favorites of all time.

Streets of Rage 2 - Mega Drive/Genesis - 1992

Gritty side scrolling 'beat-em up', not the first of its kind, I believe there were other games like this before such as Captain Commando and Final Fight. But this is the one I remember enjoying so much as a youngster. To a nine year old gamer who was used to Sonic the Hedgehog this was like a that golden ticket to that Weirdo Wonka's factory!

You picked one of four tough characters who were sent to the ghetto to beat up all manner of lowlife scum (in self defense of course). The objective was to keep going to the right no matter what as the hive baddies got tougher, bigger and meaner. You could pick up weapons and unleash fearsome combos to beat some of the stronger foes. Who could forget the street rollerblade characters’ ‘jump on the shoulders and pummel’ move!

There was even a co-op mode activated at anytime by just pressing the start key. This arcade feel was nice on a console.
