A combination of Europe and Arabia, the name first appeared as the title of a newsletter published with the backing of various European/Arab organizations. It was popularized by Bat Ye’or, a British-Egyptian author, in her book Eurabia: The Euro Arab Axis, published in 2005.

In her book, Ye’or claims that in its aspiration to challenge American world hegemony, Europe – lead by France – has aligned itself with Arab interests. In the process, Europe has become willing to accept Muslim political and cultural hegemony.

As a corollary of the Old World governments’ capitulation to Islam, many Europeans feel that their culture and national identities are in danger.
