South-Eastern Europe has long endured a chequered and fragmented history, once which has been subject to much controversy and debate over barriers and borders. However, since the break up of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s - whose televised conflict so shocked Western viewers - the region has been gradually picking up the pieces of its shattered identity and rebuilding its devastated towns and cities.
