Constantine built the city that would bear his name and become capital of the new eastern Empire. He set the stage for feudalism. He involved the state in Church affairs, and recognized Christianity.
Constantine began his role as protector of Christians as junior Caesar in Britain, when he revoked his father Augustus Chlorus’ edict against Christians, and ordered their property be restored to them.
Ten years later, he had sole authority over both halves of the Roman Empire. Diocletian’s Tetrarchy had been an attempt to emulate the wisdom of the earlier adoptive emperors. All childless, they had appointed their successors according to merit. But after Diocletian abdicated, the empire once plunged into civil war. Constantine decided that the empire needed one authority and unified it under his rule.
