Balkan Rail Pass

The Japan Rail Pass is a great savings offer for cheaper transportation on Japanese trains. It gives foreign tourists the freedom to explore the beauty of Japan, as the pass is valid for travel on most trains operated by Japan Railways (JR) including many high-speed shinkansen (bullet trains). The Japan Rail Pass allows unlimited travel on most JR trains for a period of 7, 14, or 21 days in either first class (Green Car) or second class. The Japan Railway Pass must be bought before traveling to Japan, as this discount transportation pass is only on sale outside Japan.

Buying the Japan Rail Pass for Travel in Japan

The rules governing the purchase and use of the Japan Rail Pass are very strict and inflexible. All conditions must be met.

Japan Rail Passes are only available to:

  • Foreign tourists who receive a “Temporary Visitor” stamp in their passports upon arrival in Japan. This stamp is given to all tourists visiting Japan for sightseeing purposes but not to other short term visitors such as trainees or temporary visitors using a reentry permit.
  • Japanese nationals living abroad permanently, or being married to a non-Japanese national and living outside Japan.

The Japan Rail Pass is only on sale outside Japan. Tourists buy an Exchange Order abroad and exchange it in Japan for the actual train pass. The Exchange Order must be exchanged for the Japanese rail pass within three months. The first date of validity can be freely selected for any day within one month after receiving the actual Japan Rail Pass.
