Developed by Glen Sawyer and released under a GNU General Public License, the MP3Gain volume normalizer is a free cross-platform program that analyses MP3 files and adjusts their perceived volume intensity to a uniform strength, which is specified by the user within the MP3Gain interface.

MP3Gain is particularly useful to the music lover whose MP3s have been collected from a variety of sources, recorded at different levels of volume. MP3Gain can modify the MP3s so that they all play at the same adjusted sound level, allowing for a more consistent listening experience.

How the MP3Gain Normalizer Works

MP3Gain uses an algorithm devised by David Robinson called Replay Gain to analyse the perceived volume of a sound file by measuring peak levels of loudness. The difference between these peak levels of loudness and the desired volume strength of the MP3 is calculated, and then stored as metadata within the file.
