Borovets is a Bulgarian ski resort situated at the foot of the highest peak in the Balkans, Mount Musala (2925m), which is located in the Rila Mountains in the South West of the country. The resort itself is at a height of 1300m, with the skiing ranging from this level up to 2560m. It’s a one-hour drive from the capital, Sofia.

The Skiing

The ski runs are split into three regions:

  1. Sitnyakovo - Martinovi Baraki is the lowest ski area, with most of the nursery and beginners slopes being based here. The area is heavily wooded with ancient pine trees, and has stunning natural beauty.
  2. Yastrebets is the mid height skiing area, and consists of three long intermediate runs. It is here that the championships and competitions are held, as the runs are to Olympic standards.
  3. Finally, at the very top, is the Markudjik ski area, which can only be reached by the Gondola. There are amazing views over the mountains and countryside from up here. There is a mixture of ski runs covering all grades of ability. The longest run in Borovets, the Musala Pathway-12km long, also begins its descent from here, and takes you all the way back to town.
