Unlike other first ladies of the Balkan communist countries, who either held high government posts or operated as eminence grises behind the scenes, Jovanka Broz has never involved herself in politics. She used to be a style icon and a fashion dictator; and women throughout Yugoslavia did their best to look like Jovanka or at least have their hair in a bun like her.
Jovanka was born on December 7, 1924 in the village of Pecani, present-day Croatia, into an ethnic Serbian family. At the beginning of the World War II, her family, forced by the pro-Nazi Ustasha regime left Pecani. A year later, the 17-year-old girl joined Tito’s partisans. The end of the WWII found her serving as a nurse who had risen to the rank of captain and was wounded twice. Later on, Jovanka Budisavljevic has been assigned to the Marshal Tito’s secretariat where she has stayed for six years until 1952 when she married Tito.
Josip Broz Tito (May 7, 1892 – May 4, 1980) was born in the village of Kumrovec near the present-day Croatian capital Zagreb into a mixed family: his father was a Croat, his mother a Slovene. Josip Broz was a very charismatic person. He was admired for his wartime activity as an organizer and leader of the anti-Nazi resistance, as well as for his strong opposition to Stalin and Soviet influence. A truly awe-inspiring example of Tito’s resistance to Stalin is a message found on Stalin’s desk after Soviet dictator’s death.
