Studebaker resumed production after World War II’s interruption by reintroducing its 1942 model with minor changes for 1946, a stopgap built for a few months until its truly new postwar cars’ were ready. The 1947 Studebaker arrived in May 1946 and continued to rely on a flathead six-cylinder engine, according to the Standard Catalog, but carried completely modern styling.
Gone were the 1946 Studebaker’s bulging fenders, prominent greenhouse and sharply pointed hood – having been retained from the 1942 Studebaker, they were distinctly prewar features – and replacing them were smooth sides with subtle rear fenders, lowered rooflines and flatter hoods.
The 1949 Studebaker was little changed, so new front and rear styling marked 1950. At rear, fenders were longer with vertical taillights, but the front now leaned forward with a circular grille jutting from angled vents. It all fit between comparably jutting headlights and above a seemingly free-floating bumper, a combination quickly earning a nickname.
