Relic Entertainment's 2004 RTS Warhammer 40000: Dawn Of War is a tough act to follow – based on Games Workshop's miniature strategy game, Warhammer 40000, Dawn of War garnered great critical acclaim and went on to become something of a cult classic among RTS aficionados and die-hard tabletop players alike.
Not surprisingly, expectations of the sequel were tremendously high. Commendably, Relic was not content to rest on its laurels and sought to take the Dawn Of War series in a new direction with its second installment. The final product, however, falls short of the mark – for all of its sheen and polish, Dawn Of War 2 lacks the kinetic playability and sheer scale of battles that made its predecessor so addictive.
DoW2's story is steeped in the Warhammer universe's rich lore, which paints a galaxy embroiled in perpetual conflict, where there are no good guys on any side of the barricades and where all factions are constantly struggling not only against each other but also against internal divisions that threaten to tear them apart.
